If you’re planning to visit Newfoundland and Labrador, you’ve probably already heard something about Twillingate. Whether you’re from The Rock or you come from away, people are drawn to this little town for coastal hiking trails, picturesque scenery, and vibrant cultural heritage. In the springtime, you’ll likely see massive icebergs floating offshore. I missed the icebergs — but still had a great time!

Last summer, I finally made my way over to Newfoundland on the ferry from North Sydney to Port Aux Basques. With the Long Range Traverse in Gros Morne as the main destination, you can bet I also had Twillingate on my mind. The town itself — called the Iceberg Capital of the World — is a lovely destination for visitors, with several delicious restaurants and artisanal shops to choose from. Twillingate also offers fantastic kayaking, hiking, and camping for outdoor lovers. My visit was way too short, but glad I got a taste of Twillingate. Keep reading to see what I mean.

Top of Twillingate Trail

Looking to stretch your legs after a long drive? Top of Twillingate is a great option! An easy to moderate hike (depending on individual fitness level), most complete the 3.5-km loop in an hour or so. Don’t forget to pause and take in the panoramic views. If you’ve got time, you could bring along a picnic lunch or spend the night tenting at The Common Mure site.

Lickety Split Ice Cream

You may already know that I love ice cream. For a sweet treat, head over to Lickety Split at 28 Toulinquet St for hard ice cream and soft serve favourites. For me, it had to be the wildberry ice cream sundae — with local blueberries!
Split Rock Brewing Company

If you’re into craft beer, Stage Head Pub at 119 Main St is your choice in Twillingate. You’ll find delicious craft beer options from Split Rock Brewing Company. If beer isn’t your thing, you might still enjoy the hot honey chicken burger (I know I did) or another tasty dish from the menu.

Rock Adventures Kayak Tours

If you visit Twillingate in the springtime, you could have the chance to kayak beside massive icebergs or even spot pods of humpback whales. When I arrived in July, the icebergs were long gone and the whales followed suit. Even so, I loved getting out on the water!
Rock Adventures is an excellent outdoor outfitter in Twillingate offering sea kayak tours, including the serene sunset tour. Without any risk of over-selling it, kayaking is one of the best ways to experience Twillingate. Book your tour here.
Thank you to Rock Adventures for the complimentary kayak tour! Amy is an excellent guide and I’d recommend Rock Adventures to anyone visiting beautiful Twillingate.
