As an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, I look for comfortable and technical gear that will last (without breaking the bank). I recently had the chance to test out the KUHL Renegade Rock Pant on several day hikes. These pants are high-quality, comfortable, multi-purpose, and very cool (er… I mean KUHL). Keep reading for the full review.

This fall, I had the chance to test out the KUHL Renegade Rock Pant on several hiking trails. Of course, I already have my go-to hiking pants, but why not try something new? While these tapered pants may be marketed to climbers, I’d say a wide range of outdoor lovers will find these pants a good fit. After trying them out, I appreciate the durable material, comfortable fit, tapered legs, practical zipped pockets, and a whole lot more.

About KUHL

Have you heard about this KUHL (pronounced “cool”) company? KUHL is a privately owned and independent company dedicated to making high-quality gear. Born in the mountains, this American business seeks to be environmentally friendly by not overproducing, with an eye toward ethically-sound policies and procedures.
As a consumer, product reviewer, and human, I share KUHL’s commitment to the environment and to ethics. In this day and age, it’s increasingly difficult (and expensive) to source high-quality and environmentally-conscious gear. KUHL seems to be an increasingly sought-after option.

As a versatile pant, I’m just as comfortable on the trail as I am in the city. These pants are made with tough and soft DURALUX fabric (95% Nylon, 5% Spandex). This material makes the KUHL Renegade Rock Pant durable, quick-drying, sun-protective, and comfortable.

One of my main reasons for choosing the KUHL Renegade Rock Pant is the tapered fit. The pants taper down below the knee to the ankle, with a hidden drawstring to cinch around your boots. This feature offers some protection from sand and water entering your boots on the trails.
With eight mesh-lined pockets, you’ll experience decent airflow and feel secure with belongings safely zipped away. There’s even a specific “cell phone pocket” (learned about that afterwards)—but don’t worry, you can put your phone wherever you want. These pants definitely straddle the line between lifestyle wear and technical gear.

Hiking in the KUHL Renegade Rock Pant

The KUHL Renegade Rock Pant is a great option for hiking in autumn. They’re light and still warm enough for the shoulder season. As an avid hiker, I always appreciate knowing that my gear can handle some scrapes along the way (I’m pretty tough on gear in general!). These pants moved with me as I hiked up and down hills with ease. The stretchy fabric never adds any resistance to my movement.
I should say, I haven’t had the chance to wear these pants in the summer just yet. But I expect they would be a decent option in warmer weather as well. For the winter, the tapered fit may be a bit too fitted to add a baselayer underneath. I’ll likely use different pants for winter hiking.

KUHL Renegade Rock Pant Recommendations

As a first-timer, I don’t have any comparison within the world of KÜHL pants. Though this initial experience has certainly piqued my interest. I’ve enjoyed the comfort, style, and technical performance of these pants, and will continue to use them on the trails and for casual use.
What would I change? Overall, I appreciate the tapered fit and the fabric flex in the legs. However, increasing flexibility in the waist would make these pants more comfortable. If you’re between sizes, you may want to consider sizing up. I still prefer my Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Pants in terms of overall comfort, but I’ll definitely continue hiking in KUHL pants as well.
If you’re looking for high-quality pants for hiking or travelling, the KUHL Renegade Rock Pant could be for you. As I mentioned earlier, KUHL pants are high-quality, built to last, and comfortable. You really can’t go wrong.
