Back in summer 2023, I drove from Calgary to the Yukon along the Alaska Highway — one of my favourite Canadian road trips to date! I tried to make the most of the journey, stopping at different spots along the way. One place I’d definitely recommend is Rancheria Falls Trail. It’s the perfect spot for a quick leg stretch or a longer lunch break. Keep reading to find out more.

How To Get To the Rancheria Falls Recreation Site
Rancheria Falls is located along the Alaska Highway (Highway 1), about 110 km east of Watson Lake and 186 km west of Teslin. If you’re road-tripping through southern Yukon, this is a convenient stop along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for a pull-off with a sign for Rancheria Falls Recreation Site. There’s a small parking lot, picnic tables, outhouses, and interpretive signs.

Rancheria Falls Trail — A Family-Friendly Yukon Hike
Summer 2023 was all about new adventures. After some time back in Calgary, I found myself weaving along the famous Alaska Highway, soaking up as much as possible. With long stretches between towns and a constant backdrop of wild northern beauty, the journey becomes just as memorable as the destination. Don’t rush it!
Rancheria Falls Trail isn’t a backcountry epic, but that’s kind of the point. This short, easy stroll through the boreal forest offers the chance for travellers to experience a set of waterfalls tumbling over black rock. The trail is flat and well-maintained, perfect for all kinds of road-trippers. Whether you’re stretching your legs after a long drive, travelling with kiddos, or just looking for a quiet moment in the woods, this is a solid place to stop (even just for 15 minutes).
What it lacks in distance, it makes up for in stillness. No traffic noise, no crowds (even in July). Just forest, water, and a light breeze through the trees. After hours behind the wheel, it was the kind of fresh air break that resets your head and heart a little. I’m glad I decided to stop and explore.

Know Before You Go
Parking: You’ll find a small parking lot right off the Alaska Highway with space for several vehicles, including turnaround for RVs.
Toilets: Outhouse is available at the trailhead. No facilities are along the trail itself.
Garbage: Pack it in, pack it out. There are no trash bins at Rancheria Falls, so be sure to take all garbage with you (including organic waste). Help keep the area clean for other visits. Maybe a refresher on Leave No Trace principles before you hit the road.
Pets: Dogs are welcome on leash. Keep your pup close — this is moose and bear country. Please pick up after your pet (I suggest bringing a smell-proof bag).
Navigation: The trail is short and easy to follow, with a mix of gravel and boardwalk. You’ll find some signs and viewing platforms to guide the way.
Safety: This may be a short walking trail, but it’s still northern wilderness. Watch for wildlife (especially bears), bring bug spray, and pack a rain jacket. And be sure to let someone know your plans, especially if you’re travelling solo.

It’s a quiet little corner of Yukon wilderness that offers a chance to slow down and soak in the forest air before jumping back on the highway.
