So, a little confession: I went kinda “waterfall crazy” back in June. Uisge Bàn Falls — One of the Best Waterfall Hikes in Cape Breton
Sometimes it’s hard to know what you’ll find for a hiking trail, you know? That’s definitely true for some of Nova Scotia’s provincial parks (I’m looking at you, Cape Smokey!). That being said, I was impressed right away on the Uisge Bàn Falls hike with a smooth gravel pathway. You could probably push an all-terrain stroller on a decent amount of this trail (though not closer to the falls, large boulders in the way…). Even so, Uisge Bàn Falls seems to be quite manageable a variety of different fitness levels and hiking abilities.
As I mentioned earlier, I visited Cape Breton toward the end of May and beginning of June. If you like cooler temperatures with few pesky bugs, early spring is the perfect time to visit the island (just don’t forget your rain jacket). After no more than 20 minutes, I reached the falls and soaked it all in. Most hikers will complete the 3.5 km out and back inan hour or so.
Know Before You Go
Parking: You will find ample free parking in Uisge Bàn Falls Provincial Park.
Toilet: Outhouse toilets are available on site.
Dogs: Pets must remain on a leash in the provincial park. I also recommend carrying a smell-proof bag to pack out the dog poo.
Garbage: If you pack it in, please pack it out. Don’t leave anything behind (including organic waste like orange peels or apple cores). Garbage bins are located next to the parking area.
Navigation: Uisge Bàn Falls Trail is quite straightforward, but check out Uisge Ban Falls Trail on AllTrails for additional navigation support.
What To Bring: As you’ve seen, this isn’t a huge trek. Even so, I would still bring a few hiking essentials. Bring a day pack with a water bottle and a few snacks. When in Nova Scotia, you don’t wanna go too far without a rain shell. I typically pack a warm layer, too (just in case).
